Robert E. Lee memorial vandalized, covered in downtown Roanoke
ROANOKE, Va. (WSET) -- A Confederate monument in downtown Roanoke was covered and vandalized Thursday morning.
Witnesses who first noticed it said "Rest in Power Heather Heyer" was spray painted on the front of it and some sort of oil was poured on the back.
A cleanup crew was called to the scene to clear the marking and uncover the statue.
The statue is the Robert E. Lee memorial that's on Lee Plaza at Church Avenue.
After cleaning the statue, the crews did another round of power washing to make sure that it was completely clean.
It's not clear who is responsible for the vandalism or when it was done, just sometime overnight Wednesday into Thursday.
