Community reacts to murder of Martinsville woman

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WSET) -- The Martinsville community is responding to the first murder in the city in more than a year.

Police say Katherine Likens was found dead in the woods between Ellsworth St. and Cleveland Ave. on Thursday. Her cause of death was ruled as blunt force trauma to the head.

Authorities arrested suspect, Robert Wayne Reynolds, 52, of Martinsville and charged him with first degree murder.

Officials say both Likens and Reynolds lived at the same address on Maple St., but in separate units.

Police say they also knew each other and previously dated.

Nearby neighbors say the two fought all the time. But they say Likens was a kind person, and did not deserve what happened to her.

"She worked all her life," said nighbor Linda Shaw. "And, it's, you know, that was her, always kind, a good person."

Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in the arrest.

Police declined to comment on a motive or if Reynolds is a suspect in another murder case.
