Community mourns loss of local firefighter, paramedic killed in Albemarle Co.

(Bedford County Fire & Rescue)

ALBEMARLE Co., Va. (WSET) -- The Bedford County community is mourning the loss of a local firefighter and paramedic who was killed in Albemarle County Sunday morning.

State police say Bethany Franklin, 30, of Troutville, was hit head-on by a wrong-way driver on I-64 just after 6 a.m.

Bedford County Fire Marshal Jeff Pauley says Bethany started working for the Bedford County Department of Fire and Rescue in July of 2009 as a full-time firefighter and paramedic. Bethany started serving as a part-time employee when she went back to school a few years ago and was recently working at UVa., Pauley says.

Because of her tenure, Pauley says Bethany knew a lot of the folks at the department and her untimely death has hit the career staff "very hard."

He described Bethany as an awesome employee and says she will be greatly missed.
