Alex James Joe, 18 of Lynchburg, has been charged with robbery, carjacking, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and credit card theft.

ROANOKE, Va. (WSET) -- Two people are now in custody after police said a carjacking in Lynchburg led to a standoff between the suspects and police at a motel in Roanoke.

Police said they responded to Market Square around 1 a.m. Wednesday, March 14 about a robbery when officers found a woman who told them she was walking back to a downtown restaurant after withdrawing cash from an ATM and was approached by a vehicle.

The woman told police that a man got out of the passenger side of the vehicle, pulled a mask over his face, and pointed a gun at her while demanding the case and bank card she was carrying.

The suspect then took the items, got back in the vehicle, and it headed east toward Campbell Avenue.

Police said the victim told officers the driver was a woman.

Shortly after officers responded to this incident, police said the vehicle was found in the parking lot of the Rodeway Inn where they determined that the vehicle was stolen during a carjacking in Lynchburg around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 13.

Lynchburg Police said officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of Florida Avenue around 10 p.m. Tuesday where a victim told police that a man and juvenile woman, with a toddler, approached them at the Food Lion asking for a ride.

The victim then gave them a ride to a nearly church, but when they got there, the suspect pulled out a gun and demanded the keys to the vehicle and stole the victim's purse with it.

A “BOL” for the vehicle was sent to regional law enforcement by Lynchburg Department of Emergency Services.

Roanoke Police sent an alert to Lynchburg Police that the vehicle was located in the motel parking lot and officers were able to determine a hotel room rented by the suspects, but they were unable to get the suspects outside.

More officers from the Roanoke Police Department were called in and they were able to make contact with the suspects, who were then taken into custody without further incident around 8 a.m.

Child Protective Services was then called to the scene to assist with the small child that was located in the motel room.

According to police, the suspects were taken to the Roanoke Police Department where investigators from the Roanoke Police Department and Lynchburg Police Departments continued their investigations. Evidence from both incidents were recovered from inside the vehicle located in the parking lot.
