DANVILLE, Va. (WSET) -- Students at Averett University are on fall break, but some of them are still spending that time in the classroom.

On Thursday, members of Averett's football team went to O.T. Bonner Middle School in Danville to kick off the Game Changers mentoring program.

Team members, coaches and school officials spoke to the students about their futures and building successful careers.

"I'm glad I had the opportunity because it's a blessing. I'm proud to be able to come here and talk to these kids and reach out and hopefully help them in any way I can," said James Counts, a senior football player at Averett University.

Later the sixth graders got some one-on-one time with the football team.
