APPOMATTOX, Va. (WSET) -- A group text message is all a local football team needed to help out in their community.

Appomattox County High School football coach Doug Smith texted his team asking for their help in cleaning up at Morning Star Baptist Church after it burned down in January.

The fire broke out January 14, around 5 a.m., and was a total loss.

No injuries were reported.

The church was originally built in 1925.

The good news is that the church has insurance, the bad news it's going to take a good long while to rebuild and they need some help.

That's where the Appomattox County Raiders enters.

Smith put the call out to the players Monday night.

On Thursday, they responded in force coming to clear the burnt rubble from the church and the team helped get a lot done.

"It just feels good to help out our community after they have supported us after championships after championships and it just feels good to come out and give," said football player, Maleek Hubbard. "The support of them and get stuff done."

Pastor Tony Cousins even brought his grandsons to help out.

State Police have said that they believe the fire is not suspicious in nature.
