Poison control online help

LYNCHBURG, Va (WSET) - A new tool to help save your children -- when every second counts.

There is an alarming trend of poison-related deaths -- especially in children -- linked to the opioid crisis.

In the first two months of this year Poison Control Centers said they received 11,000 opioid related calls.

Couple that with the use of marijuana edibles, liquid nicotine and single use laundry detergent packs found in more homes nationwide and there are a lot of dangers to our kids.

But Krista Osterthaler with the American Association of Poison Control Centers said many parents are too scared to call poison control.

“They have concerns about privacy and confidentiality. Poison control is confidential. So they're searching online and that may not be credible," Osterthaler said.

The American Association of Poison Control Centers just launched this new interactive online tool .

You can type in what your child is exposed to and get quick, expertly vetted answers.

But having the poison control number at your finger-tips is paramount. Getting that lifesaving number is easy.

Now you can text “poison” to 797979. It will send you back the poison control hotline to your phone and give you the option of adding it as a contact.
