Caring for a loved one who has dementia can be emotionally taxing. But it can take a steep financial toll as well.
A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that between 157 and $215 billion was spent on dementia in 2010.
The annual cost per person ranged from $41,000 to $56,000.
Researchers estimate about 80 % of that was used to pay for nursing home or at-home care.
That's only going to get worse.
The study's authors say the cost of dementia could double by the year 2040.
