Health Check: Probiotics
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) - Gut health is a topic a lot of you are talking about after our ABC 13 food shocker.
We introduced you to the idea of how having a healthy gut can affect the rest of your body. Part of healing your gut involves taking probiotics, but there are a lot of products to choose from.
Some of you wanted to get more guidance on probiotics.
Vince Ettare at Timberlake Family Pharmacy is going through specialized training on gut health.
With disruption in your gut health -- say when you take an antibiotic -- Ettare said you need to take a probiotic.
"In addition to killing the bad stuff it kills the good stuff so what you want to look for are probiotics that have high quantities of latobacillus and Bifidobacterium,” Ettare said. “We are talking on the order of 10 billion units. That's where you get your biggest bang for the buck."
Ettare said anyone generally feeling crummy can benefit from a probiotic. He said they keep this in their fridge at home -- and every time someone in the family gets sick they take a couple doses a day for a few days and it helps.
