Experts recommend shingles and pneumonia vaccines
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- A federal expert panel has recommended a new more effective shingles vaccine to protect adults 50 and older.
Experts say shingles affects 1 in 3 people in their lifetime.
Shingrix is the first new vaccine for shingles in a decade and is 91% effective according to the health experts.
They say if you are one of the 20 million people who has been vaccinated before, you need to be re-vaccinated with the new drug.
Another vaccine available protects against pneumonia.
Experts say there are several severe strains of pneumonia that can be caught anywhere from anyone.
"If you have chronic heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, diabetis, if you're a chronic smoker, an alcholic, if you have sickle cell disease you are at higher risk for getting pneumococcal disease. talk to your health care provider and get the recommended vaccines," Dr. Anita Kurian shared.
It is also said that if you are 65 or older, you also fall in a higher risk group.
