Centra Health offers lung cancer screenings in hopes to detect early
LYNCHBURG, Va -- Centra Health is offering cat scan screenings for lung cancer in Lynchburg, Farmville, Bedford and Gretna.
Nurse practitioner Aimee Strong shared that many people wait until they are sick to get tested.
She said being proactive about lunge cancer screenings is just as important as other lifesaving scans such as mammograms.
"One of the challenges we face with lung cancer in general is the stigma associated with it. People who have smoked a long time or even smoked a little bit feel very guilty about it and feel like it's something they've done to themselves and that's just not the case," Strong said.
The cat scan is covered by insurance, including medicare, if the following criteria is met:
- Age 55-57
- Smoked a good amount over lifetime
- Current smoker or have quit in the last 15 years
