Danville Regional Medical Center is hiring a Registered Respiratory Care Practitioner

Education: Graduate of a Respiratory Care Program of Study for an Advanced Practice Level Respiratory Therapist, with an A.A.S. degree, or Certification of Graduation.

Experience: One year of routine respiratory care experience preferred. Graduation from an Associate Degree level program can be substituted for one year of experience.

License/Certification: Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia, to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP). Certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support at time of hire. Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT) or eligible to take the NBRC’s Registered Respiratory Therapist exams and have passed the RRT exam within 12 months of hire. Certification in ACLS, PALS and NRP within 6 months of hire.

Technical Skills: Must have basic computer skills.

Typical Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual dexterity and eye and hand coordination. Requires standing, walking, stooping and stretching. Occasionally lifts, carries and pushes items weighing up to 100 lbs. (Mechanical ventilators, electrocardiographs, stretchers, medication carts and patient care carts, etc). Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions and at times extended shifts.

Job Summary: Provides diagnostic and therapeutic interventions on physician prescribed patients with acute and chronic cardio-pulmonary dysfunction, utilizing state of the art procedures and bio-medical equipment. Many services will apply to all age groups, requiring the Respiratory Care Practitioner to modify the therapeutic or diagnostic modality to the patients size and age/ or age group (Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult or Geriatric Patient) to attain the proper results. The individual Practitioner may be required to work up or down (flex time) to insure standardized coverage within the Respiratory Care Department.

Tasks Performed:

  • Coordinate and participate in the administration of medical gas therapy, humidity therapy, aerosol therapy. Chest physical therapy, and hyperinflation therapy, perform and process EKGs, treatments, and the administration of medications used in respiratory care procedures in accordance with physician orders.
  • Perform the more complex respiratory care procedures to include calibrating, setting up and monitoring of mechanical ventilators, blood gas analyzers, BiPAP/CPAP equipment, pulse oximeters, and other respiratory equipment.
  • Evaluate, initiate, monitor and wean patients from mechanical ventilation.
  • Participate as a member of the code team and rapid response team by responding to emergency or STAT calls to establish natural and artificial airways, including oral endotracheal intubations or to help or asses with any other respiratory related issue.
  • Provide clinical instruction on the proper use of equipment to hospital staff and patients.
  • Participate in the routine maintenance of equipment; make periodic rounds to insure proper functioning of bio-medical equipment.
  • Transport patients requiring manual ventilatory support or supplemental oxygen to various locations within the hospital.
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new personnel and students.
  • Enter charges and results into hospital information system and any departmental data base (i.e.-RapidComm, CardioServer, etc).
  • Documentation of ABG and Arterial Lactic Acids results, critical and non-critical.
  • Documentation of EMAR scanning.
  • Participate in department Performance Improvement.
  • Prepares shift assignments for staff, participates in analysis of staff utilization, ensures that all paperwork is completed and breaks have been obtained by staff when working as charge therapist for that assigned shift.
  • Adheres to all Departmental and Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as directed by Manager or Director of Respiratory Care.
  • Demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skills to understand and react effectively to the patients they are assigned to include neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Will contribute to the maintenance of a safe working environment and the employee’s own personal safety by following all policies and procedures and performing all tasks safely.
