Education: Graduate from a school of Physical Therapy. Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience: Minimum of one year experience as staff physical therapist preferred. Sound knowledge base of clinical theory and practice. Possesses/demonstrates effective skills in oral and written communications with assertive and collaborative working skills. Demonstrates patient and customer service advocacy as well as managerial/supervisory competency with sound decision making skills. Requires flexibility in adapting to work demands and priorities. Demonstrates patient and customer service advocacy.

License/Certification: Licensed by the Virginia State Board of Medicine to practice Physical Therapist. Current BLS certification required. Current Virginia Driver’s Licensure and reliable transportation.

Technical Skills: Must have basic computer skills.

Job Summary: Plan, implement and evaluate patient care programs designed to increase, maintain, or restore physical functions to patients assigned. Participate in the training, instruction, and supervision of supportive staff personnel. Directly provide physical therapy services that are reflective of the patient developmental needs and age; neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.

Tasks Performed:

  • Demonstrates and maintains current knowledge and skills to understand and react effectively to provide appropriate care to all patients.
  • Performs initial physical therapy evaluation and assessment of patient prior to provision of services.
  • Determines and develops treatment goals and plans in accordance with the diagnosis and prognosis, with a treatment program established to aim at preventing or reducing disability or pain or restoring lost function.
  • Provides therapeutic interventions that focus on posture, locomotion, strength, endurance, cardiopulmonary function, balance, coordination, joint mobility, flexibility, pain, and functional abilities in activities of daily living.
  • Applies therapeutic modalities that include but are not limited to heat, cold, light, air, water, sound, electricity, massage, mobilization, and therapeutic exercise with or without assistive devices.
  • Assesses and trains in locomotion, including as appropriate, the use of orthotic, prosthetic, or assistive devices.
  • Performs home safety recommendations to decrease risk of patient injury and promote optimum physical function in the home.
  • Provides patient/family/caregiver education as appropriate and documents such.
  • Monitors the extent that goals have been met including improvement in function and the degree to which pain associated with movement is reduced.
  • Participates in case conferences, consultations, and educational programs designed to improve patient care and staff performance.
  • Coordinates physical therapy activities with other services, agencies, and personnel involved in patient care management.
  • Completes accurate, thorough documentation within departmental specified timeframes; utilizes correct terminology and abbreviations.
  • Keeps visit notes, physician orders, and careplans, and daily activity record up-to-date.
  • Provides technical guidance and direction to supportive staff personnel; completes supervisory visits for physical therapist assistants in accordance with state and federal regulations and agency guidelines.
  • Keeps abreast of innovations in physical therapy and possible adoption of new techniques to improve work efficiency and treatment effectiveness.
  • Provides case management of physical therapy patients including scheduling of patients with PTA so that therapeutic goals are met and requirement documentation is completed in a timely manner.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Maintains knowledge base of community resources.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the job.
