Danger Ahead: Top 5 most dangerous intersections in Lynchburg
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) -- Holiday travelers and shoppers will clog area roads over the next several days. And if you're not careful, you could wind up becoming an accident statistic.
When you're out and about just remember, there is no stretch of road like it in the entire city.
Traffic on Wards Road is stop and go, and everything in between. And for a number of unlucky travelers, there is usually an accident waiting to happen right around the corner.
An ABC13 News investigation into dangerous roads shows how risky it is for drivers out there.
We crunched the numbers from a nearly four-year period to get the "Top 5" most dangerous intersections in Lynchburg.
On Wards alone, there have been a whopping 254 crashes. "I believe it 100 percent... Because everybody's coming from every direction," said one driver.
Coming in at No. 5 on the list is Timberlake Road at Wards Ferry. There were 57 accidents there over the past four years.
The people who work at the Hill City House Grille have seen it all. "Well, we've sat inside and watched a lot of accidents happen on this intersection," said owner Donna Reichard.
Another hot spot for accidents is Candlers Mountain Road at Mayflower Drive. That intersection comes in at No. 4 on the list with 71 accidents.
"It's a very dangerous intersection. I've seen lots of accidents happen here," a driver told us.
Wards Road at the Harvard Street/William Stadium Road is the No. 3 most accident prone spot with 73 over a four year span.
But that junction may seem pale in comparison to the No. 2 most dangerous intersection. Wards and Atlanta Avenue takes that position.
"It's a very congested area. I went to Sweet Briar College and everybody would always dread having to come out here because it's always so busy and just hectic," a young driver shared with us.
That location has seen 138 crashes.
"I've probably seen two or three. It's just two or three too many," a motorist said.
But to find the top spot on the list you'd have to head back to the mountain. Driving into the precarious No. 1 spot is the intersection of Candlers Mountain and Murray Place. It's seen 140 accidents.
