Lynchburg, VA - Play is such an important part of your child's development. That's why Lynchburg City Schools is now offering a play group that's helping both the parents and children.
Play time just got a little sweeter for families in our area. Every Tuesday and Wednesday the Lynchburg City school system is offering free playgroups for all preschool children.
Dana Guarino-Murphy helps oversee the program Wednesday mornings at the Daniel's Hill Community "When we have a community play group those children have the opportunity to come and play with peers who help them with language models and help them to learn to play appropriately with the toys," Guarino-Murphy said.
It's also a chance for parents, like Brenda Henderson, to learn how to be their child's first teacher and to connect with other families.
"I do a lot of play groups with friends but I like this because they have, like a said, a format they go by. Singing and books and just different stuff set up that we don't have at home," Henderson said. "The teachers, they know what they are doing. I really like that they have it organized and preplanned so it's just no free play."
While it may feel like all fun and games to the children, organizers promise what they're doing lays the foundation for learning well into the future.
The playgroups are all year long -- and they just kicked off last week. Anyone with a preschool age child can join in.
They are Tuesdays from 10-11:30 a.m. at Lynchburg College Brewer Townhome or Wednesdays from 10-11:30 a.m. at Daniel's Hill Community Center.
