Hero from the Heart of Virginia: James Hammack
James A. Hammack retired as a Chief Petty Officer from the Navy with 20 years of service. His son Brian said he was deployed in action in the Vietnam War for two years in squadron HC-7 that was one of the most decorated during the Vietnam War.
Brian said HC-7 had many duties, but its most important was retrieving downed pilots in combat.
James had six children with his wife Norma whom he married in 1962. Norma already had four children when she marred James, who took her and her four children and raised them as his own, according to Brian.
James Hammack was born in Charleston, West Virginia in 1936.
Brian said both James and Norma have advanced Alzheimer's Disease and require the care of others.
Brian, who now lives in Monroe, said that James lived his life serving and helping others and now he is happy to be able to partially return what his father did for him.
