Honoring Sergeant William Carney

During the assault on Fort Wagner in July of 1863, 54th Massachusetts infantry Sergeant William H Carney showed extraordinary courage. After the color barer had been killed in action, Carney retrieved the flag and continued the charge, despite being severely wounded.

Upon retreat back to Union lines he modestly stated "Boys, I only did my job. The old flag never touched the ground!"
