While an umpire in the minor leagues, Emmett Ashford's flamboyant character and style made him a favorite of fans and players alike. In 1966, 19 years after Jackie Robinson's debut he became the first African American to umpire a game in professional baseball. A highlight of his career came in 1970 when he officiated in the World Series.
