Speedwell, VA - The USDA Forest Service now says the Landfill Fire, just south of Speedwell, has grown to 1,088 acres.
At the same time, crews have managed to get the fire 60% contained.
In all, more than 70 fire fighters and support personnel are fighting the fire which is located on the north face of Horse Heaven Mountain in Wythe County.
On Friday, crews were able to establish a fire line around the entire affected area allowing for effective burnout operations.
While no structures are currently threatened, certain areas of the George Washington/Jefferson National Forest are closed. In particular areas east of Highway 21 just south of Speedwell.
Smoke from the fire has been mixing with smoke from another wildfire in North Carolina which has the Forest Service advising regional residents of the potential for continued noticeable haze that could last for several more days.
The origin of the fire, which began on Tuesday, is still under investigation.
