Lynchburg, VA - American heroes buried in Lynchburg are being honored this weekend.
Saturday, volunteers will place more than 1,000 wreaths on veterans' graves at Old City Cemetery. The Annual Wreaths Across America ceremony is sponsored by the Blue Ridge and James River Chapters of DAR.
The event began more than 20 years ago when a business in Maine began placing wreaths on the headstones at Arlington National Cemetery during the holidays.
A photo of the stones adorned with wreaths and covered in snow circulated around the internet, drawing national attention to the cause.
"Even if their service was 50 years ago, they're still remembered for what they gave. And how they helped to keep our country free," said Executive Director Bruce Christian.
Saturday's ceremony begins at noon. The public is invited to help place wreaths on some of the veterans' graves.
