Woman Charged After Infant's Remains Found in Christiansburg

Christiansburg, VA - Christiansburg police have filed charges against a woman in connection to infant remains found in the closet of a home last month.

Melinda Sue Woolwine, 23, has been charged with one count of concealment.

Investigators believe Woolwine gave birth to a nearly full-term fetus two or three weeks before it was found in a home on East Street wrapped in a bag.

They say they found the remains after Woolwine came into Lewis-Gale Montgomery Hospital complaining of fatigue and blood loss.

The medical examiner's preliminary report shows that tests to determine if the baby was alive at birth were inconclusive because of the state of decomposition.

Woolwine has been released on an unsecured bond.

If convicted, she faces up to 5 years in prison and/or a $2,500 fine.
