Danville, VA - Twenty-five years ago a woman in Danville made history when the Danville Fire department hired her as its first female firefighter.
Shelby Irving started her 26th year at work Thursday.
Although she enjoys her job, she says she never thought she would end up being a fire fighter.
"One of my friends challenged me to try out for the fire department and you know I was young then and said, 'Oh I'll do it'. And I started going through my test and you know one thing led to another and I started meeting other guys that were trying out as well."
Irving says she didn't have hard time being the only woman at first because she grew up with five older brothers.
She plans to spend many more years with the Danville Fire department.
