Witnesses Share Scary Experience Watching Appomattox Shooting Unfold

Appomattox, VA - 69 year old Aubrey Bascom Evans of Appomattox County is the man county deputies are searching for Friday.

He's wanted in connection to a shooting at the Court Street Marathon gas station in Appomattox.

The shooting took place at 4:30 p.m. in broad day light, when one woman, witnesses say was shot point blank in the back of the head, sitting in her car, in this gas station parking lot; no word on her condition or why she was the target.

It was a quiet convenience store turned crime scene, Friday.

The car towed from the Marathon gas station, where witnesses say a woman was shot point blank in the back of the head.

"I walked around over there and I seen the blood running from her nose and her ear and stuff, so I was like, she was shot" said one man.

Deputies are searching for 69 year old Aubrey Bascom Evans the Third of Appomattox County. Witnesses say it seemed the shooter and his female victim knew each other. A casual conversation that apparently turned viciously violent.

"I heard a gunshot go off. When I turned around and looked, you could see the smoke raising out the car, then he looked over there towards us, then he closed the door, then he got in his truck and he drove on off and he pulled on down there, went on down the street down that way" said the same witness.

For some, a simple stop to get gas turned into a terrifying few hours.

"I don't know what to say, it was just really shocking" said one woman.

"You wouldn't expect that to happen right here in this small town or whatever so, it's crazy" said another witness.

No word on the victim's condition or identity, or why police believe Evans is the man that pulled the trigger.
