Henry Co., VA-- It's a great time for business at Philpott Lake in Bassett. They've been seeing a lot of foot traffic recently after the completion of their newly renovated group campground site.
It's all part of a bigger project, which includes a brand new marina. Representatives from Philpott Lake say they expect it to be a huge asset and draw a lot of people to the area.
The groundbreaking for a new marina at Philpott Lake back in May signified a new beginning.
"It's very exciting for us," said Craig Rockwell, Operations Project Manager at Philpott Lake. "We had a marina back in 2001, it burned down and we tried a couple of time to rebuild the marina and that didn't just didn't happen."
But now construction is in full swing.
"The next several weeks, folks will see a lot of construction and activity going on down there, the actual docks are being constructed off-site and they'll be brought in and assembled," said Roger Adams, Director of Henry County Parks and Recreation.
But visitors can actually see some progress of an another part of the marina project right now, the newly renovated campground. It's proved to be a popular attraction to the lake with already 30 nights rented.
"The campground has been real popular with churches, civic groups, families and friends that want to have a large gathering," said Adams.
The campground is one of a kind at the lake because of its water, sewage and electrical hookups. With the success of the campground so far, Philpott Lake representatives are more excited for what the new marina will bring.
"The marina itself will draw more people," said Rockwell. "Being able to push your boat on the water, keep your boat on the water, get gas for your boat without having to take your boat out of the water."
In addition to boat slips and fuel slips, the new marina will have a convenience store, restrooms and picnic area.
"Philpott Lake is a tremendous asset to the community and this helps us to do a better job of meeting the needs so people can come out an enjoy it," said Rockwell.
Philpott Lake representatives say they hope to open the marina by Labor Day. If you'd like to rent a night at the new campground, call Henry County Parks and Recreation at 276-634-4640.
