Danville, VA - Officials are warning about a phone scam targeting customers of Danville Utilities.
People are getting a call demanding immediate payment of their utility bills, and restaurants are the primary target.
This started about six weeks ago when a restaurant got a call from someone claiming to be an employee of Dominion Virginia Power saying their service would be disconnected if they didn't pay right then.
Danville Utilities says it does not call any customer and demand immediate payment. Instead you would be notified by a letter.
Officials say if you receive a call from someone you do not trust and who is urging you to make a payment to Danville Utilities, hang up and check the legitimacy of the call by contacting Central Collections at 434-799-5125.
