Warm Winter Weather Boosts Business at Snowflex

Lynchburg, VA - Central Virginia has not had a lot of snow this winter. And, that is good news for the folks at the Liberty Mountain Snowflex.

Snowflex is a little slower this time of year, because everyone hits the resorts. But, in a place that does not need snow for winter sports, business is booming here.

This time of year people like to hit real slopes like Wintergreen or Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort, but with no real snow hitting the ground, the artificial turf at Snowflex is seeing a lot of action.

"We've picked up a lot of business from some of the other ski resorts who have been hurting due to the warmer weather," said Drew Sherwood, General Manager at Liberty Mountain Snowflex.

Sherwood says the resorts are actually asking Snowflex to take in some of their members who have nowhere to ski.

"A lot of resorts have called us, asking us to cut some deals, because of the weather. We love helping them out," said Sherwood.

It's made for a busier than normal winter season at Snowflex. Also, Snowflex is cheaper than big ski resorts, drawing in a lot of locals to try the sport for the first time.

"It is so convenience since we live in Appomattox. The price is also good. It's real reasonable. It's a good place for the kids to have fun," said Lee Scruggs, first timer visitor at Snowflex.

"I live about five minutes away. It's better than going up to Wintergreen, because that is almost an all day trip," said Freddie Harris, a visitor at Snowflex.

Sherwood says another big draw this year has been snowboarding, and skiing lessons.

"This way you are not spending $50 to $100 before you go to another resort, and you can make sure you know what you are doing at Wintergreen or Snowshoe," said Sherwood.

Overall it has been a very good year at Snowflex. Managers say they saw a 15% to 20% increase in business last year. And, this spring they plan to build a 400 foot tubing run.
