Roanoke, VA - The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine is the country's newest fully accredited medical school.
The Liaison Committee on Medicine Education made that decision this week.
The accreditation is necessary to allow students at the school to continue into residencies and become licensed.
The school needed to graduate its first class as a final requirement.
Coincidently, just three hours later, the school also received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
"Pulling everybody together and giving them the announcement was just, it was just like the weight had been lifted off your shoulders. It's amazing," said Dr. Dan Harrington, Senior Dean for Academic Affairs.
As validation to the school's success, 100% of the first graduating class was placed in programs after graduation.
