VT Basketball Coach James Johnson Hires Three Assistants

Blacksburg - New Virginia Tech head basketball coach James Johnson has hired three assistant coaches for the coming season, including Salem native Mark Byington and Roanoke native and former VMI standout Ramon Williams.

Byington is a former high school Player of the Year in Virginia who led the Salem Spartans to the state championship his senior year. He comes to Blacksburg after nine years at the College of Charleston, he's also a former Hargrave Military assistant and director of basketball operations at UVa.

Byington is joined by Ramon Williams, who's coached the last three seasons at Ohio University after stints at DePaul, Richmond and VMI. He's a member of the VMI Sports Hall of Fame. He and his twin brother Damon formed one of the most prolific scoring duos in NCAA basketball history. And Kurt Kanaskie comes to Tech after one season as associate head coach at Navy and before that eight years at Penn State. He's got 18 years head coaching experience, stops at Drake, Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Lock Haven University.
