      Virginia Tech Basketball Season Outlook

BLACKSBURG - The Hokies were a depleted team following the firing of Seth Greenberg and the hiring of James Johnson. Recruits bailed and because of the timing of the hiring Johnson was unable to get a full recruiting class. As he enters his second season as the head coach, Johnson has a lot more in the tank but expectations are low, very low. The ACC media picked Tech to finish dead last in 15th place.

At this point you have to be as optimistic as possible, especially if you're a member of the team and during preseason media day every player reinforced the fact that this team has the right mentality as the season approaches. However, significant minutes are going to be played by youngsters who have yet to prove themselves at college basketball's highest level.

      NOTABLE COMMENTS ON ROSTER

C.J. Barksdale (G.W./Hargrave) has been suspended by coach Johnson for the first three games of the season for an undisclosed violation of team rules. "He made a bad decision and he's got to pay for it," Johnson told The Roanoke Times. "We expect him to still be a major part of this program." Barksdale will miss the USC Upstate, West Virginia and Western Carolina games.

Malik Mueller was expected to contribute right away but the freshmen will have to sit out the entire season because the NCAA has deemed him academically ineligible. Mueller, from Germany is allowed to practice but told The Roanoke Times that NCAA took had an issue with two of his courses - a physical education class and a religion class. "There were two classes they didn't accept, which dropped my GPA too low," he said.

Marshall Wood (Rustburg) should get more playing time after missing a part of last season with an injury. Many fans thought he was too skinny. He knew that and has bulked up, adding noticeable weight to his 6-foot-8 frame.

Ben Emelogu is only a freshman and yet he has earned the title of team captain. This definitely speaks to his energy and leadership skills but if you're a Tech fan you do have to wonder, how come none of the veteran players have stepped up into that role following the departure of Erick Green.

Cadarian Raines is going to have to be a force down low if Tech wants to compete on a nightly basis in the ACC. An observer could see he could bring it one night and disappear the next.

MUST SEE GAMES (FULL SCHEDULE LISTED BELOW)

WVU at VT, Nov. 12th - It's part of ESPN's marathon of college basketball. It's early in the season but since it's against another power conference team it should give fans a glimpse of what to expect for the season.

VMI at VT, Nov. 18th - Media members love matchups between two local teams and VMI could come away with a victory in this one. Stan Okoye has graduated for VMI but the Keydets are capable of surprising the Hokies.

VT vs. Michigan State, Nov. 22nd - Michigan State is a top 5 teams and it's on a neutral court in Brooklyn, NY.

Radford at VT, Nov. 29th - It's 14.6 miles from one campus to the other.

VT at Miami, Dec. 8th - The Hokies get an early start on ACC play with a trip south. Miami lost a boatload from its ACC championship team.

VT vs. VCU, Dec. 21st - The game will be played on Richmond's home floor. VCU has the havoc defense and a preseason Top 25 ranking.

VT at UVa, Jan. 25th - The Cavaliers have won three in a row and five out of the last six against Tech. You never want to be the little brother in this rivalry.

VT at Duke, Feb. 25th - The Hokies first face Duke and then return home to face UNC. Fun stuff for coach Johnson.
