      Virginia Basketball Season Outlook

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The upcoming season is easily the most anticipated of Tony Bennett's coaching tenure at Virginia. The Cavaliers have made it to the NCAA Tournament once in March 2012 but if the Cavaliers live up to preseason hype and expectations fans won't be biting their nails on Selection Sunday. UVa enters as the 24th ranked team in the preseason AP poll. Of the five players that played the most minutes in their NIT quarterfinal game against Iowa, four of them return (Joe Harris, Justin Anderson, Mike Tobey, Akil Mitchell).

In addition to that group UVa can now rely on Anthony Gill, a transfer from South Carolina, and Malcolm Brogdon, who redshirted the 2012-13 season while recovering from foot surgery performed on March 7, 2012.

To see interviews with head coach Tony Bennett and a number of players please click on the video player above. (Interviews will be progressively updated this week (Nov. 5th-8th)).

      NOTABLE COMMENTS ON THE ROSTER

Bennett wants Justin Anderson to be more efficient on offense

Mike Tobey benefited a ton by playing on the U19 USA team even though he didn't receive a lot of playing time

After seeing him scrimmage in practice Bennett was reminded at how big and strong Malcolm Brogdon is for a guard

Joe Harris got a lot of rest over the summer and feels that will only make him stronger for this season.

Harris and Akil Mitchell are the clear leaders on the roster. Others may emerge as the season progresses but Bennett will rely on them to take control when need be.

MUST SEE GAMES (FULL SCHEDULE IS LISTED BELOW)

VCU at UVa, Nov. 12th - it's a part of ESPN's Marathon of college basketball and the Rams are also in the preseason Top 25.

UVa at Davidson, Nov. 16th - The game is in Charlotte and Davidson is a perennial power in its conference. Stephen Curry isn't playing there anymore but it still makes for an interesting matchup, especially for a UVa team that has yet to prove itself on the road on a consistent basis.

Liberty at UVa, Nov. 23rd - On paper UVa should handle the Flames but LU has beaten the Cavs in Charlottesville. It at least makes for a good story line for Central Virginia media.

Wisconsin at UVa, Dec. 4th - It's part of the annual ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Games like this always look good in the eyes of the selection committee - in some cases, win or lose.

UVa at Green Bay, Dec. 7th - I think it's fair to say this game would not be on the schedule if anyone else was UVa's coach. Bennett played for his father at Green Bay from 1989-92.

Northern Iowa at UVa, Dec. 23rd - Paul Jesperson transferred from UVa to Northern Iowa. He has to sit out this season as a result so he may not even travel with the team to Charlottesville. Other than that Northern Iowa consistently contends in the MVC.

UVa at Tennessee, Dec. 30th - Two days before the new year UVa will be on the road against another power conference team. It's the final non-conference games for UVa.

UVa at Duke, Jan. 13th - Uva knocked off Duke at JPJ last season. That still didn't get them into the NCAA Tournament. I'm willing to guess Duke remembers that loss.

UNC at UVa, Jan. 20th - UNC is looking to bounce back from a sub-par season. They're in the preseason Top 25 and aside from the fact that UNC has dominated this series over the past 20 years, this matchup may be viewed as UVa's biggest rival (VT and Maryland would also be in that mix).

UVa at Notre Dame, Jan 28th - Notre Dame basketball is not Notre Dame football but I'm sure this will be a memorable trips for the UVa team. Notre Dame is also a preseason Top 25 team.

Syracuse at UVa, March 1st - It'll be the first time the Cavs face the Orange as members of the ACC. Coach Jim Boeheim brings all kinds of prestige and his teams have been very impressive in the past 5-6 years.

UVa at Maryland, March 9th - It's the final game of the regular season and the final game for Maryland as members of the ACC (aside from the conference tournament in Greensboro).
