UVa's livin' high on the hog.
Most UVa fans will be the first to tell you they'd rather see a national championship in football or basketball but you have to like the fact that the UVa lacrosse team won the whole thing 9-7 over Maryland.
They're weren't expected to but as the national 7 seed they won four games to claim its 5th national title and 4th under coach Dom Starsia.
That guy has dealt with a lot. Last year with the murder of Yeardley Love by one of his players George Huguley. Then this year he had to suspend and kick off two of his best players - twins Shamel and Rhamel Bratton. Then, just before the NCAA semi against Denver, one of UVa top offensive players, Colin Briggs, was suspended for a 'team matter'. Briggs returned for the finals and scored a career-high 5 goals. Way to make up for lost time. This team contrasts with the 2006 team that also won it all. That team was 17-0. This year's team 13-5.
The UVa baseball team is the overall number one seed in the NCAA Tournament.
They'll face Navy, St. John's and ECU in their regional Fri-Sun or Mon this coming weekend. We'll have it covered for you.
In 09 they weren't supposed to make it to the College World Series but they went on the road twice and got there. Last year they were expected to get to the CWS and failed. They advanced out of the regional with a monday win over St. John's, then won game one against Oklahoma in the super regional but lost the next two games to end the season. That last loss was an 11-0 beat down on national tv. I'm guessing that game may be used as motivation if UVa is up against the wall.
High school tournaments are rockin and rollin. Regionals are this week and states are next week at Radford/Salem/Blacksburg. Off the top of my head, schools that have teams in baseball or softball or soccer or tennis or track and field still alive:
E.C. Glass, JF, Brookville, Appomattox, Chatham, Halifax, Nelson County, Amherst County, Liberty, William Campbell, Tunstall, Staunton River, Blacksburg, Hidden Valley, Cave Spring, Lord Botetourt. I apologize if I missed some. We'll have coverage of all of them leading up to states. Coaches call in your scores 434-455-5137 or email us email@example.com.
NBA finals start Tuesday night on ABC 13 at 9pm so take a little nap so you can watch. Who ya got? The Heat or the Mavericks. I'm glad the Celtics and Lakers are out. I like fresh faces. LeBron made his "Decision' to take his talents to South Beach even though the Heat play indoors. He went there to win titles and now they're there. I think a majority of people don't want to see him or the Heat win in their first year together. I don't. I like LeBron and personally think everything with his decision was overblown. He simply wanted a better job like all of us do. He did what was best for him like all of us do when it comes to matters like this. So they'll win. Pat Reilly will acquire more big men for them and better roll players in the off seasons but not this year. I'm rooting for the Mavericks. I like Mark Cuban, Dirk Nowitzski and Jason Kidd. I've liked Kidd since he played for Cal and beat 2-time defending champ Duke in the second round of the 93 NCAA tourney. He was a freshman that year. Came back for his soph. year and then left for the NBA. I hope it goes 7 games. I always say if the series, game doesn't involve the Reds, Bengals or Xavier Musketeers - I want the series to max out.
FYI - we do a playoff pick 'em pool in the newsroom for pro sports just for fun, no money involved. This year only one person got both teams correct in the finals. His name - Dennis Carter. He says he was lucky, not good.
As always rock it out.
