UVa-Memphis Post Games Notes, Thoughts, and Observations

Virginia-Memphis Game Notes, Thoughts, and Observations
-Virginia is Sweet 16 bound for the first time since 1995. They advanced to the Elite 8 that season. UVa will face four seed Michigan State Friday night at 9:57 p.m. on TBS in New York City's Madison Square Garden.
-I asked freshman point guard London Perrantes, "When you hear Michigan State, what do you think of?" He responded, "Magic Johnson. He's my favorite player."
-UVa had two opportunities last season to reach Madison Square Garden but lost in the Preseason NIT and the Postseason NIT.
-Is it just me or does Mike Tobey make his first shot attempt every game?
-There was a lot of orange in the crowd at PNC Arena with Mercer, Tennessee, and Virginia fans.
-UVa ended the half on a 16-2 run to lead 35-30 at halftime.
-I happened to sit next to Tennessee star Jarnell Stokes during the first half of the UVa-Memphis game. Tennessee beat Mercer in the earlier game in Raleigh Sunday night. Stokes played alongside Mike Tobey in the U-19 USA World Championships. Team USA won the gold medal. UVa coach Tony Bennett was an assistant coach on that team. Stokes, a Memphis native who narrowed his college choices to Tennessee, Memphis, UCLA, Florida, and Kentucky, said, "I love Coach Bennett. He's so genuine." Stokes was the center on the starting five of that team joining Marcus Smart (Okla. State), Rasheed Sulaimon (Duke), Elfrid Payton (Lou. Lafayette), and Montrezl Harrell (Louisville).
-Michigan State played Virginia Tech earlier this season. Technically James Johnson could help Tony Bennett with the scouting report right?
-Official attendance at PNC Arena Sunday night: 18,712.
-Anthony Gill has some sweet spin moves. He told me after the game he worked on those moves all summer long with one of the assistant coaches.
-Memphis had three seniors guards. Joe Jackson was held to 7 points, three assists, and two turnovers. Chris Crawford was held to 3 points and 1 assist. Geron Johnson was the only one that exceeded his season average in points. He averaged 7 and scored 11 points.
-Memphis averaged 77 points per game. They were held to 60. UVa averages 66 points a game. They scored 78.
-At the end of the game the large contingent of UVa fans began to chant "ACC, ACC, ACC!" and "Tony Bennett, Tony Bennett, Tony Bennett!"
-Did you know Evan Nolte could dunk and Mike Tobey could make a three-pointer? Nolte's nickname is 'Takeoff.' Tobey knew he'd hear something from Bennett if he missed the three-point attempt.
-UVa is the only remaining team from the ACC in the NCAA Tournament. Duke, UNC, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and N.C. State have all been eliminated.
