They won the Big Ten Tournament Championship, winning three games in three days (just like UVa) against Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Michigan State won each of those games by an average of 12.6 points.
In Spokane, Wash. Michigan State had no trouble with 13-seeded Delaware in the NCAA Tournament's second round. They beat the Blue Hens 93-78. 12-seeded Harvard, fresh off an upset of 5-seeded Cincinnati, challenged the Spartans in the third round but Sparty prevailed 80-73.
Michigan State scores 76 points per game (UVa averages 66) and allows 65 points per game (UVa averages 55).
The Spartans dealt with a number of injuries over the course of the season but finally have everyone healthy. Head coach Tom Izzo said they've used the same starting lineup for seven straight games. They've won six of those seven games and the one loss was by two points at Ohio State.
Prime players: Soph. Gary Harris (16.9 ppg), Sr. Adreian Payne (16.6 ppg), Sr. Keith Appling (11.7 ppg), Jr. Branden Dawson (11.0 ppg). Payne scored 41 points in MSU's win over Delaware last week.
Coach Izzo is 7-4 in Sweet 16 games. Under Izzo, who took over MSU in 1998, the Spartans have reached the Sweet 16 12 times in 17 years. Only Duke has more appearances in that time span.
Michigan State is making its 28th appearance in the NCAA Tournament with a record of 58-26 (.690) in tournament play. MSU has made eight trips to the Final Four (1957, 1979, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2010) and captured the NCAA Championship in 1979 and 2000.
