UPDATE: Suspect in Hospital after Officer-Involved Shooting at Retirement Community
UPDATE: According to police, the suspect has been identified as Dennis Michael Wright, 59, of Roanoke City.Warrants have been obtained for Wright, charging him with attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer; attempted malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer; use of a firearm in commission of a felony; and two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling. All charges are felony offenses. According to law enforcement, the initial 911 calls reported Wright was carrying a handgun and shot gun or rifle. The long gun turned out to be a BB gun, and the handgun was a 9mm semi-automatic pistol which Wright was using during the exchange of gunfire. The motive is still unknown but Wright does have a family member who is a patient at the retirement community. It is believed that Wright acted on his own and there were no additional assailants, according to authorities.--------------Roanoke Co., VA - Investigators are trying to figure out why a man showed up at a local retirement community, they say, opening fire before being shot by police.It happened within the Friendship Retirement Community, on the Roanoke/Roanoke County border, just past 11 Monday night.A Roanoke County spokeswoman said 911 started getting calls in from employees reporting, what she described as, an "armed visitor".Those calls were soon followed by more calls reporting that a shot had been fired.We are told an initial group of police began tactically clearing the Health and Rehabilitation Center - where this all took place.As they did, a second group of officers are described as having "engaged" the suspect in the lobby and that man was shot one time.No police officers were hurt.And while no employees or residents of the community were hurt either, Friendship management is providing counseling and support for anyone there that feels they need it."Right now it's just trying to make sure they are ok and understand the situation and how it wasn't anything personal against them as we are still trying to look into what exactly happened," said Friendship Retirement Community Marketing Director, Chris Dodd.Police have yet to identify the man or say what his motive was.We do know he was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition.-----------Roanoke Co., VA - According to police, employees called 911 a little after 11 Monday night saying an armed person had fired shots inside the facility's health and rehab center.According to a spokesman, as officers walked through the building, they encountered the suspect in the lobby and he was later shot. EMS crews took him to the hospital where we're told he's in stable condition. Police are not identifying the suspect at this time.------------Roanoke County, VA - Police say a suspect is in the hospital after an officer-involved shooting at a retirement community building.Roanoke County spokeswoman, Amy Whittaker, tells The Roanoke Times that police got a call around 11 Monday night about a suspicious person at the Health and Rehab Center of Friendship Retirement Community.She says when officers got there - they encountered the suspect in the lobby and officers fired shots.Whittaker says it is unknown whether the suspect was armed.President and CEO of the facility, Russ Barksdale, told the newspaper that he got the call around 11:30 Monday night about a problematic visitor - that staff was trying to calm down in the lobby.Barksdale says the residents and staff are safe.Whittaker says the suspect was taken to the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.
