      Update: 1:08 p.m.

Rockbridge Co., VA - State Police say rain and the glare from the sun may have caused a massive pileup on I-81 in Rockbridge County Sunday.

State Police say more than 40 vehicles were involved in the crash in Rockbridge County at mile marker 176.

Several people were taken to the hospital, with what are described as non-life threatening injuries.

The tractor trailers are still on the side of the road and should be removed Monday night.

      Update 11:20 p.m.

Rockbridge Co., VA - Rockbridge County crews say both southbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County have been reopened.

The 41-vehicle pileup happened around 5 p.m. Sunday near the mile marker 176 just south of Route 716.

Several people were taken to the hospital, but emergency crews say they don't think anyone had life-threatening injuries.

Officials from Virginia State Police, the Rockbridge County Fire Department, EMS and the sheriff's office responded to the accident. Crews have been working all night to tow the cars off the interstate and clean up the debris.

A couple from North Carolina was part of the pileup. They're car was hit by a tractor trailer, but luckily they weren't hurt. They, and other witnesses , say the weather was the reason for the accident.

"It's like of course the rain and then the sun came out and the sun was so bright and no one could see 50 feet in front of them. We were trying to do the best we could, and then people just started going off the road," said Shay and Danielle Tippens.

In total, 41 vehicles were part of the accident, including tractor trailers and mobile homes. Crews say it was one huge chain reaction, causing one of the largest pileups they've ever seen.

"When I got out, and I looked behind us, I was just like 'Oh my God.' Everything that happened up here happened behind us...but,...it could've been so much worse," said Danielle Tippens.

Rockbridge County crews say the pileup stretched about 1 mile back.

They say they've removed all the cars from the road, but the tractor trailers will stay until Monday night.
