UPDATE: Power Restored to Many in Galax, Grayson Co. After Major Outage Saturday

Galax, VA - Appalachian Power has power back to all but a few hundred customers in Galax and Grayson County after a major outage Saturday morning.

Spokesperson Teresa Hall said the outage at one time affected nearly 20,000 customers in the area and was caused by a downed transmission line to a substation.

Crews have been working all day to restore power to the area, Hall said.

Most people should have their power back on by tonight.

Galax, VA - A downed transmission line to a substation has left thousands without power in Galax and Grayson County.

According to Appalachian Power Spokesperson Teresa Hall, the outage happened around 8:30 a.m. and left nearly 20,000 customers without power.

Since then, crews have been working furiously to restore service to the area and are nearly halfway complete as of Saturday afternoon, Hall said.

Hall says it's hard to tell when power will be fully restored to the area, but the remaining 8,000 customers can expect to be without power through 5-7 p.m., maybe longer in some areas.

There is no word on what caused the transmission line to go down, Hall said.

Galax, VA - Nearly 3,000 Appalachian Power customers are without power in Galax, AEP reports. Another 6,257 customers are without power in Grayson County.

In Carroll County, 357 people have no power.

There is no word on the cause of the outages or when power will be restored at this time.
