Roanoke Co., VA - Roanoke County investigators are looking for answers as to why a man murdered his estranged wife before turning the gun on himself.

While they are working out the details, it turns out the groundwork has been in the works for quite some time.

Roanoke County Police are familiar with the home where this tragedy happened. It's in the 5900 Block of Sunnycrest Road in the Cotton Hill section of the county. Twice this year, before this incident, police had responded to calls there for domestic issues.

Wednesday, another call came in at 8:42 p.m. after neighbors heard as many as seven gunshots.

Those same neighbors say the retired nurse who lived in the home had been having trouble with her estranged husband, which included issues over property and pets.

Once police arrived, they saw two people dead inside through the window and sent a SWAT team in to clear the home.

"There was some confusion initially as to what might have happened; how many shots had been fired and other circumstances that suggested the possibility of another person being involved. With that in mind, the SWAT team was called out," said Lt. Chuck Mason with the Roanoke County Police Department.

Investigators have identified the victim but are waiting to contact next of kin of the alleged killer before releasing either name.
