Amherst, VA - The Amherst Police Department says they've caught a man wanted for sexually assaulting a woman last week, after a manhunt Monday night.
After our report aired Monday, police say they got a tip 19 year old Joshua Edwards Smith was in the Gladstone area and officers from Amherst Police, Amherst and Nelson Counties, and state police began searching. Police say Smith took off from a residence in Nelson County and ended up crashing in Amherst County.
Police say they spent several hours chasing Smith down, both by car and on foot. They called in the Amherst County Sheriff's Office tracking dog as well as the state police helicopter, before finally catching Smith shortly before midnight Monday.
Smith was wanted on felony charges related to an assault last Wednesday in the town of Amherst. He is charged with Rape, Forcible Sodomy, and Object Sexual Penetration. He is being held without bond pending a preliminary hearing in Amherst General District Court.
