Dinwiddie Co., VA - Virginia State Police have identified the suspect in Thursday's deadly shooting of a state trooper.
The suspect has been identified as Russell Brown, 28, of Chesterfield.
Brown has been charged with one count each of capital murder of a police officer and two felony firearm counts.
Update 9 p.m.:
Dinwiddie Co., VA - The Virginia State Police are mourning the line-of-duty death of one of their own.
Master Trooper Junius A. Walker, 63, died Thursday afternoon following a shooting incident on Interstate 85 south near the 45 mile marker in Dinwiddie County.
Walker, a 40-year veteran of the department, was assigned to patrol Dinwiddie County.
At approximately 1:20 p.m., Virginia State Police responded to a call for shots fired. A responding trooper found a marked VSP patrol car in the woods off the right side of the southbound lanes of I- 85 in Dinwiddie County. The responding trooper witnessed a male subject standing outside Trooper Walker's patrol car and firing a weapon into it.
The responding trooper exchanged fire with the suspect, who then fled on foot into the woods away from Interstate 85. At approximately 1:58 p.m., the male suspect was arrested by the Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Office and is now in State Police custody.
Master Trooper Walker was transported to VCU's Medical Center in Richmond, where he succumbed to his injuries.
"A valued and dedicated public safety professional, Master Trooper Walker's sudden and tragic death is a tremendous loss to his Virginia State Police family," said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent. "His family, friends and fellow troopers are in our thoughts and prayers tonight during this difficult time."
The investigation is being conducted by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The southbound lanes of Interstate I-85 remain closed as state police are processing the crime scene. Traffic has been diverted off I- 85 at Exit 48/De Witt.Master Trooper Walker is survived by his wife and two adult children. He joined the Department March 1, 1973. He has spent 29 years patrolling Dinwiddie County.--------------
Dinwiddie Co., Va. - WRIC out of Richmond is reporting that a Virginia State Trooper has been shot and killed off Interstate 85.
They also say one suspect is in custody.
This happened after 1:20 p.m. Thursday.
State police say a trooper responded to a shots fired call and after getting there, that trooper saw a state police vehicle off on the side of the road with a man standing outside of it.
They say that male suspect fired several rounds into the police vehicle and the responding officer fired at the suspect, who ran into the woods.
The suspect was caught by state police and Dinwiddie authorities around 2 p.m. a short distance from the scene.
Several media outlets reporting this trooper has passed away from his injuries.
State police say they won't comment on the trooper's condition until the family is notified.
