UPDATE: I-77 Traffic Back to Normal After Major Back-Up Saturday

From ABC 13 viewer Frankie York on I 77 north. York had been in the traffic for three hours as of 5 p.m. Saturday, but was finally able to get past the congestion later Saturday.

UPDATE: 12:45 a.m.

Carroll Co., VA - VDOT is reporting no traffic issues after a 20 mile back-up earlier on I-77 northbound Saturday left motorists waiting in their cars for hours.

An accident Saturday at mile marker 32 created congestion, state police said. The traffic kept backing up throughout the day. A separate accident at mile marker 17 only made the problem worse Saturday evening.

Traffic finally began returning to normal late Saturday.

Carroll Co., VA - VDOT now reports a multi-vehicle accident on mile marker 17 in Carroll County, helping to contribute to a major backup on Interstate 77 northbound. Virginia State Police say an earlier accident caused congestion, and lingering traffic is now backed up to the NC state line.

An ABC 13 viewer sent us a picture of the traffic from their cell phone. Frankie York says he's been in the traffic for three hours as of Saturday evening.

There was an accident earlier Saturday was at mile marker 32 on I-77 north, but state police say it has since been cleared. Since then, state police say the congestion has been getting worse throughout the day.

If you are caught in the traffic, or the scene, and if it is safe to do so, send any pictures to: for use on-air and online. (Only if it is safe!)

VDOT urges motorists to avoid the area at this time.
