Update: I-581 Back Open After Deadly Accident in Roanoke
Update 10:50 a.m.:
Roanoke, VA - Traffic is back to normal in Roanoke following an apparent suicide that forced police to close I-581 just as rush hour began.
State Police say a call came in just before seven that someone had been hit in the southbound lanes of 581 at the Hershberger Avenue overpass.
The preliminary investigation shows that a man was seen sitting on the ledge of the bridge just before the accident.
The man was hit by at least four vehicles and died at the scene.
As investigators worked the scene, they were forced to close down Exit 143 on the interstate, which caused some serious backups into the late morning.
"It's going to be treated as a crime scene, so they have to document everything, take pictures. It's going to be a little while yet," said Sgt. Bob Carpentieri with Virginia State Police
All traffic was flowing normally by 11 a.m.
