CJ Phillips

Update: 5:30 p.m.:

Halifax Co., VA - A Virgilina family is heartbroken after a single vehicle accident killed a 17-year-old boy on Tuesday. Responders pronounced CJ Phillips dead at the scene. Police say the teenage driver who survived the crash ran off the side of Buckshoal Road before overcorrecting and hitting a tree.

Phillips had just graduated from high school with plans to attend community college in the fall.

CJ's Mother "I knew something was wrong with CJ because he would have called me," said CJ's mother Sandra Phillips.

Family members say CJ had plans to attend Danville Community College to study electrical technology. As a senior, he took classes at the Higher Education Center. And he was part of a class that created a prosthetic hand for a little girl using 3D technology.

"He would go to school whether he was sick or not, just to be there with his friends," said Sandra Phillips.

His best friend, Eli Hudson, was behind the wheel at the time of the crash. He ended up seriously injured. The boys were heading out to meet their girlfriends for dinner. Daphnie Wilkins now wishes she could just hug CJ one more time.

Daphnie Wilkins "I just couldn't believe it. I thought that I was going to see him at the hospital and he was going to be okay, or I would see him the next day," said Wilkins.

Now, as the family tries to put the pieces together, Sandra Phillips hopes all parents will follow this advice: "You're crazy if you don't hug them, love them, do everything you can for them, because it might be the last day you ever see them."

A visitation will be held Friday from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church. The funeral will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m. Family members say memorial donations in CJ's honor can be made to the Virgilina Fire Department and the Midway Fire Department.
