UPDATE: Concord Man in Intensive Care Following Accident on 460

UPDATE: 10:31 a.m.

Lynchburg, VA - A Campbell County man seriously injured in an accident this weekend is in the surgical intensive care unit at Lynchburg General.

Officers responded to the scene of the crash near the Concord Turnpike Saturday night around 9p.m.

Police say John David Reed, Jr., 50, rear-ended a truck, and then when he got out of his car, he was hit by a van.

The van was driven by Erica Atkinson, 41, of Lynchburg. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.

Officer Ronnie Sitler with the Lynchburg Police Department says 50-year-old David Reed Jr. was involved in two separate car accidents.{}

ABC 13 was on the scene Saturday night after it happened. We spoke to a couple that was driving down 460 toward Appomattox when something caught their eye- a car flying down the road weaving in and out of traffic.

They say the driver, now identified as Reed, almost hit a guardrail when passing them. They say they tried to catch up with him to get a license plate number, but he was going too fast. They didn't expect what they saw next.

"We went down, turned around and came back and by then he was on the on the ground," said Mrs. Day who witnessed the accident.

Police say Reed rear-ended a truck. He then turned off his lights, got out of his car and walked to the back of it. That's when he was struck by a driver driving a caravan. Police say the woman driving the van was Erika Atkinson, 41.{}

"I got out of my truck and was going to go see if he was ok when the van come along, and hit him," said Bobby Collins.{}

Officials say Reed is still in critical condition.

Atkinson was also taken to the hospital and is listed to be in stable condition at this time.

"I was looking straight at him, when she hit him...that's not a good thing. I just hope he'll be alright," said Bobby Collins.{}
