Rocky Mount, VA - The Franklin County United Way celebrated their 2013 kick-off Thursday evening at the Farmer's Market in Rocky Mount.
This year's goal is $375,000, Executive Assistant Barb Magill said. The Franklin County United Way has already raised 10% of their goal, Magill said.
Thursday night's kick-off event was a chance for the United Way and the organization's partners to explain to the public how much of an impact the organization has on the local community, Magill said.
Last year along, 21,000 people - all Franklin County residents - were assisted by the United Way's 16 partners. When combining the effort of 32 affiliates, 30,000 local people were helped from last year's contributions, Campaign Director Andre Peery said.
To put the efforts of the United Way in perspective, up to 35% of the Franklin County community was helped by the organizations efforts, Magill said.
"I am in awe of how many people are in need of assistance on a daily basis," Magill said. "I am so very proud to be a part of the Franklin County United Way Family and am really excited to see just how many more residents we will be able to assist in the coming year. Our Partners are an amazing group of people with hearts for this communitywe are sure to meet this goal."
Thursday Night's entertainment was provided by bluegrass group Geneva and Friends along with food by local restaurant Two by Two BBQ.
ABC 13's Jamey Singleton was on hand to emcee the event.
The American Red Cross, Helping Hands of Franklin County, The Free Clinic, the Southern VA Child Advocacy Center, Carilion Hospice, STEP, Inc., Friends of the Family Services, Stepping Stone Mission, and the local Public Safety representatives were on hand for the kick-off.
