United Way Fills Backpacks for Hungry Children

Lynchburg, VA - The Young Leaders Society and the United Way are teaming up to feed hungry children.

For about a month the groups have been sending backpacks filled with food home with children at Paul Munro Elementary School. The backpacks contain two breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks. The backpacks will also go home with students over upcoming holiday breaks. They include material to help parents with other issues they may be facing.

"[We] put together an awesome packet. It's information on different support throughout the community that they can get, which is good, because obviously if you need help on the weekends to feed your kids, you're probably struggling in other areas too. So, we're not trying to band aid the situation we're trying to eventually maybe help it go away more," said Shannen Ranson, who is coordinating the backpack project.

There are currently 28 kids who receive backpacks and three more are on the waiting list.
