Henry County, VA - We are learning more about one of the drivers who died in a wrong-way crash on Route 220 in Henry County last night.
Officers say the driver of a black pick-up truck was running from police when he hit the vehicle of 28-year-old Jennifer Courtney Thomasson.
Family members are saying Thomasson was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
She had been out with friends and was less than a mile from home when she was hit head on.
Police say a deputy with the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office saw the pick-up truck parked on a dead end street near Stoneville, NC, and he approached the driver to see if they needed help.
The driver sped off, crossing the state line into Virginia. The driver entered the southbound lane of Route 220 driving the wrong direction, leading to the head-on collision.
According to the Sheriff's Office, that deputy was given the okay to pursue the suspect across state lines because he was endangering other drivers.
They say the deputy tried to alert other motorists of the danger but he was unable to prevent the crash.
Preliminary findings of an internal investigation show the deputy took the correct action.
"The reason why he continued the pursuit was concern for public safety. You've got an erratic driver, traveling at a high rate of speed in the opposite lane of a busy bypass. That poses a threat to the public, " said the Rockingham Co. Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer.
The name of the driver in the pick-up truck - who also died at the scene - is unknown. His body has been sent to the medical examiner's office for proper identification.
