Tree Falls on Power Lines in Amherst County, Injures AEP Worker

Amherst Co., VA - There were a lot of issues in Amherst County Tuesday morning after a tree fell on some power lines.

AEP crews were out fixing the lines around 11 a.m.

It happened on the Route 29 bypass and shut down all four lanes. Drivers had to take a detour.

The lines were also laying across the Norfolk Southern Train Tracks.

One AEP worker was hurt from getting a tree off the lines and sent to the hospital.

"The tree did fall against him, but he does have non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Lynchburg General in stable condition," said Amherst County Public Safety Director, Gary Roakes.

The downed lines knocked out power to about 400 people in the area, including Amherst County High School.

As a result students were sent home around 10:30 a.m.

One lane of northbound side of 29 was shut down for most of the day.
