Lynchburg - The top sees opened play Friday afternoon in this year's Central Virginia Invitational Tennis Tournament.
Two-time defending champ and former UVa number one Sanam Singh won twice in the afternoon to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals. Number two seed and another former UVa number one Michael Shabaz had a tough opening test, knocking off Jordan Kauffman in a tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets.
THIS YEAR'S UVa number one Jarmere Jenkins also won his opening match, straight-setting Chiraag Shetty, later beating Oakwood pro Mark Vines in a tiebreaker.Jenkins coming off an incredible senior year at UVa, winning NCAA doubles and leading the Cavaliers to their first-ever NCAA team championship.
Jarmere Jenkins, CVITT #3 SEED THIS YEAR, said "Unbelievable experience, can't really put it in words. The guys, we've all worked so hard and for so long to get that title. And you know now that we finally got it, we're just ready to get another one."
