Tips On How To Avoid Fundraising Fraud

Lynchburg, VA- Police are still working to locate a man charged with obtaining money by false pretense, after holding a fundraiser in the name of CASA of Central Virginia, where CASA says it never got the proceeds.

That situation now has people thinking, how can you really know the money you donate to any cause is actually going to the right place? In Craft's case, he told us he didn't give CASA the money because he had a dispute with them. He claims he gave it to another charity instead.

The United Way has tips to help you feel confident your money is going into the right hands:

-Be sure to check a non-profit out on sites like Guide Star and Charity Navigator.

- Make sure there are representatives from the organization at the fundraising event.

- If in doubt, write a check directly to the organization.

- Get a receipt after giving.
