Teachers Get Gift Cards for School Supplies

Lynchburg, VA - Teachers at one Lynchburg school got a nice surprise Wednesday.

The teachers at Fort Hill Community School reported for what they thought was a normal faculty meeting. But they found out that they all got $50 gift cards from Wal-Mart for school supplies.

The Wal-Mart on Old Forest Road chose Fort Hill as its School of the Year. The store manager presented the teachers with their gift cards today.

"It'll take the burden off of the teacher financially, those that do push out of their own pockets. And to give to the children that extra that they need, that they can't get at home, they get it here at school in that safe and secure manner," said Carman Via, the store manager.

"By having this with Carman, they find out that it's not only the school that cares about them but it's the community that cares as well," said Cathy Viar, a teacher.

Fort Hill is an alternative education school which offers programs for students in grades 6 through 12.
